The Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal irons truly do provide immense forgiveness on just about every shot. From using these clubs, I have noticed that they aren’t as forgiving on heel strikes as they are toe strikes due to the toe bias weighting.
Nevertheless, the 921 Hot Metal irons are still very forgiving and will help any higher handicap lower their scores on the course.
There was also a noticeable increase in my distance when using these clubs. Part of this is due to the strong lofts of these game improvement irons, but also with their design.
The addition of chromoly in their irons truly did increase the ball speed with these clubs, which will subsequently add more distance to every hit.
When I first heard about these irons, I knew they were promoted as some of the best feeling iron models, but I didn’t expect it to be as pleasing as it was.
The Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal irons have a very buttery soft feeling when you make impact, and the club seemed to glide through the turf. Even when practicing at the range, the club didn’t seem to get caught up in the mat.
As with any game improvement iron set, you will lose some ability to shape your shots on command. I was still able to hit draws and fades with the Hot Metals, but they were not very dramatic.
Being able to add shape to your shots on any given shot becomes increasingly important as your handicap lowers.
Sometimes you may be stuck behind a tree or in any other troubling situation where you need to hit a draw or fade, and although it is still possible to do so, the JPX 921 Hot Metal irons may not be able to create a big enough shape to clear the object.
This also comes pretty standard in any iron set with stronger lofts, but the distance gaps between your irons and wedges will increase.
Using the Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal irons will almost force you to get a gap wedge to bridge the distance between your pitching wedge and sand wedge.
Having a distance gap between clubs can make life much harder on the course, and you will be forced to play more uncomfortable shots.
For example if you didn’t buy the gap wedge, you might be forced to play a 110 yard shot with a very light PW swing, something you might not typically practice.
Unless you don’t mind investing in a gap wedge or having a 20-30 yard distance gap between your pitching wedge and sand wedge, you might want to find a set with less strong lofts.
Stock Shafts and Grip
Shaft
The stock shaft for the Mizuno JPX Hot Metal irons is the Nippon N.S. Pro 950GH Neo Steel shaft. This shaft comes in either regular or stiff shaft flex.
Choosing the right shaft your game irons is very important to help your performance. A regular shaft is usually recommend for players with a swing speed under 90 mph.
Using a shaft that is too stiff will result in poor launch of the golf ball and you will shank it more often, losing distance on your shots. This typically applies to a high handicapper, and occasionally a mid handicap.
If you have a faster swing speed, you could choose to play a stiff shaft, but the choice is generally based on your personal preference. Many pros still play with a regular shaft flex, despite their impressive speed.
When buying your irons, make sure to choose the right flex for your shaft so that you can get the loft and distance you want on your shots.
Grips
The stock grip for the JPX Hot Metals is the Lamkin ST Hybrid.
Grip doesn’t have a direct influence on your performance, but different grips can make the club more comfortable to hold, boosting your confidence.
If you want to purchase the JPX Hot Metal irons, you can always get a different grip, but you may have to pay some extra money for them.
Lofts
As stated before, the Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metals have a very strong loft setting. The 4 iron has a loft of 19°, while the PW is 44°. The longer irons in this set are separated by 3 degrees, and as you move into the short irons it becomes more spaced out at 5 degrees.
These loft settings will most certainly help you improve your distance, but they do leave more distance gaps as the loft increases. You won’t have to worry about this with your long irons, as the lofts are very close together.
As I said before, it only starts to get more concerning as the irons get more lofted. For instance, the PW is 44°, so this leaves a big gap between your sand wedge. However, Mizuno does offer a solution for this.
You could choose to purchase a matching gap wedge, and even a sand or lob wedge. The GW has a loft of 49°, so it will bridge perfectly from your PW to your SW.
Personally, I would not purchase the sand wedge or lob wedge. I currently use the Titleist Vokey SM8 wedge setup of 52°, 56°, and 60°. Wedges like these ones have better designs and features that will truly elevate your short game.
However, if you’re looking to save some money, the JPX 921 Hot Metal wedges will not cost as much as other premium wedges, but they lose some quality.
Who should use the Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal irons?
The Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal irons will provide the best value for a high or mid handicap. These clubs have great forgiveness with their large sweet spot and help you hit the ball straight.
The longest irons will help you achieve greater distance from farthest out, without sacrificing any accuracy or speed.
Alternatives
High handicappers
If you’re a high handicapper who just doesn’t like the look or performance of these irons, you could very well try out the Callaway Rogue ST Max irons.
These game improvement irons offer plenty of forgiveness and distance, with a few different features.
Mid handicappers
While a mid handicapper could most certainly use these irons, they could also try the JPX 921 Hot Metal Pro. Th Hot Metal Pros iron set has more of a forged iron design, however they still have stronger loft settings and incredible forgiveness.
The compact shape will only help to shape the ball better, and it won’t sacrifice any forgiving features. So if you think you’re ready to take your game to the next level, I’d suggest checking out the Hot Metal Pro irons.
Low handicappers
For low handicap players, some other Mizuno irons I’d recommend are the JPX 921 Forged iron or Tour model. These two sets have very compact profiles that allows for ultimate shot shaping ability, but sacrifices forgiveness.
Both the tour and forged model have weaker lofts, but they will still get your great distance from long irons and short irons alike.
Forged irons take on the shape of a blade, so this Mizuno iron design should only be used by lower handicaps who don’t need any forgiveness.
My Personal Thoughts
As I stated before, I purchased these irons as a high handicapper who was playing with a Top Flite starter set. I instantly noticed an increase in distance and accuracy, and my confidence shot straight up.
I also noticed my ball speeds went up greatly as well. I immediately felt every aspect of my game increase, and now I’m sitting at a mid handicap.
